31.07.08 Drove up to the moor. Zero visibility, with low cloud and rain. Moved down to Spitchwick to paint the river Dart. No-one about.

Painted for a few hours, rain eased so decided to try the moor again. Clear patches. Worked for an hour and then the heavens opened again.

Luckily this was not all that I experienced in Devon this summer.

My main sources of inspiration have been the coast at Bigbury, the moor around Holne and the Exe estuary from Powderham. Each area is incredibly beautiful and each has brought its own challenges.

A fast incoming tide at Bantham left me standing in the water with my paints floating away, unbelievable rain storms on Dartmoor, turning the sky black and making it impossible to paint. If it rained I got wet, if the sun shone, I took my time and enjoyed what was around me: two peregrine falcons attacking swimming gulls; yellow hammers and skylarks; snakes resting between unfinished paintings I had left out overnight and the fantastic rhythms of light and dark created by the sky, sea and land.
